Understanding Medicare
New to Medicare or just need a refresher? Here are the essentials every beneficiary should know.
What Is Medicare?
Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people age 65 and older, as well as certain younger people with disabilities. It is divided into four parts: Part A (hospital insurance), Part B (medical insurance), Part C (Medicare Advantage), and Part D (prescription drug coverage).
Original Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage
Original Medicare (Parts A & B) is provided directly by the federal government and covers hospital and medical services. Medicare Advantage (Part C) is offered by private insurers approved by Medicare and typically bundles Parts A, B, and D together — often with added benefits like dental, vision, and hearing.
What Does Medicare Cost?
Most people pay no premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years. Part B has a standard monthly premium (adjusted annually). Medicare Advantage plans may have $0 premiums, while Part D premiums vary by plan. Out-of-pocket costs depend on the plan you choose.
Medicare Enrollment Periods
Knowing when you can enroll or make changes is critical. Missing a window can result in penalties or gaps in coverage.
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
7-month window around your 65th birthdayYour first opportunity to enroll in Medicare. Begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and extends 3 months after. Missing this window can result in late enrollment penalties.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
October 15 – December 7 each yearAlso called the Fall Open Enrollment Period. During this time, you can switch Medicare Advantage plans, switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage, change your Part D plan, or drop Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment (OEP)
January 1 – March 31 each yearIf you are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare (and join a standalone Part D plan) during this period.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
Triggered by qualifying life eventsCertain life events — like losing employer coverage, moving to a new service area, or qualifying for Extra Help — may trigger a Special Enrollment Period that allows you to make changes outside the standard enrollment windows.
